How to build a SaaS product in India: from idea to first paying customer
Most SaaS products fail from building the wrong thing, not from bad code. This is the order we follow to get from idea to a paying customer in about three months.
Step 1: Validate before you build
Talk to at least ten people who have the problem. Ask how they solve it today and what they pay for it. If you cannot find three who would pay or pre-order, refine the idea before writing code.
Step 2: Define one core workflow
Pick the single job your product does better than the current workaround. Everything else, including team features, reports and integrations, waits. A tight scope is what makes a fast, affordable MVP possible.
Step 3: Choose a boring, scalable stack
- Frontend: React or Next.js, see Next.js vs React for SEO for when each fits
- Database: PostgreSQL, explained in why Postgres is usually the answer
- Auth and payments: use proven providers rather than building your own
- Hosting: a managed platform until traffic justifies more
Step 4: Build the SaaS basics early
Multi-tenant data separation, roles and permissions, subscription billing and an admin panel are hard to retrofit. Design them in from the start, even if the first version only uses a fraction of them.
Step 5: Price for value, not for cost
Start with two or three simple tiers tied to usage or team size, charge from day one and adjust after talking to customers. Free forever plans delay the learning you need.
Step 6: Launch small and measure
- Onboard the first ten customers personally
- Track activation: how many sign-ups complete the core workflow
- Set up basic monitoring, see the cheap observability stack
- Review feedback weekly and ship small improvements
Mistakes that delay launch
- Adding features before anyone has paid
- Building a native mobile app before the web product works
- Over-engineering for scale you do not have yet
- Skipping a design pass, which hurts trust and sign-ups; see UI/UX mistakes that kill conversions
