Next.js vs React for SEO in 2026: which should you build on?

Google can index a plain React app, but it does so slower and less reliably than a page that arrives as finished HTML. If organic traffic matters to your business, how the page is rendered matters.

Next.js vs React for SEO in 2026: which should you build on?

The core difference

A client-rendered React app sends the browser an almost empty HTML file and a bundle of JavaScript that builds the page. Next.js can send the finished HTML, either generated at build time or on the server, and then adds interactivity on top. Search engines and social previews see real content immediately.

Why it affects rankings

  • Crawling and indexing. Google renders JavaScript in a second pass that can lag by days, and other crawlers and AI tools often do not run it at all.
  • Core Web Vitals. Shipping less JavaScript before the first paint improves load speed, which is a ranking signal.
  • Metadata. Titles, descriptions and social cards must be in the HTML to be read reliably.
  • Internal links. Real links in the initial HTML help crawlers discover every page.

When plain React is fine

Logged-in dashboards, internal tools and anything behind a login do not need to be indexed. A client-rendered React app is simpler and cheaper there. The problem starts when public pages, such as a homepage, product pages or a blog, are built the same way.

When to choose Next.js

  • Marketing sites, blogs and documentation that need to rank
  • Ecommerce catalogues with many product pages
  • Sites that need fast loads on mid-range phones
  • Teams already working in React who do not want to switch skills

Not the only option

For content-heavy sites with little interactivity, a static-first approach can be even lighter, as we argue in Your marketing site doesn't need to be a SPA. The right pick depends on how much of the site is interactive. You can also keep a React app and pre-render the public routes, which is how we handle some projects.

Rendering is not the whole story

Even with perfect rendering you still need good content, clean URLs, a sitemap, structured data and fast images. Rendering only removes a barrier. Our web development team builds these in from the start, and you can compare what that costs in How much does a website cost in India.

The takeaway

If a page needs to rank, serve it as HTML. Use Next.js, or another server-rendering approach, for public pages and keep plain React for authenticated app screens. Talk to us if you are unsure which fits your project.
