Core Web Vitals checklist for 2026: 8 fixes that make your site faster and rank higher

Google uses three speed and stability measurements, called Core Web Vitals, as part of its page experience signals. Most sites can improve all three with a handful of targeted fixes.

Core Web Vitals checklist for 2026: 8 fixes that make your site faster and rank higher

The three metrics, in plain terms

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how fast the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds to taps and clicks. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the layout jumps while loading. Aim for under 0.1.

Fixes for LCP

  • 1. Compress and resize images. Serve modern formats such as WebP or AVIF at the size the device needs.
  • 2. Preload the hero image and key fonts so the browser fetches them first.
  • 3. Use a CDN and caching so pages are served from a location near the visitor.
  • 4. Render pages as HTML on the server or at build time. This matters most for content sites, as covered in Your marketing site does not need to be a SPA.

Fixes for INP

  • 5. Ship less JavaScript. Remove unused libraries and split code so each page loads only what it needs.
  • 6. Defer third-party scripts such as chat widgets, analytics and ad tags until after the page is usable.

Fixes for CLS

  • 7. Set width and height on images, videos and embeds so space is reserved before they load.
  • 8. Avoid inserting banners above existing content and use font-display settings to prevent text jumping.

How to measure and keep it fast

Check Google Search Console's Core Web Vitals report and PageSpeed Insights for real-user data, then re-test after each change. Set up lightweight monitoring so regressions are caught early; our cheap observability stack shows how. For data-heavy pages, see how we cut a dashboard load from 6 seconds to 1.

Does speed really affect rankings?

Speed is one signal among many; relevant, helpful content still matters most. But slow pages lose visitors before they read anything, so faster sites tend to convert better as well as rank better. The framework you choose also plays a part, see Next.js vs React for SEO.

The takeaway

Fix images and render path first, cut JavaScript second, and reserve space for everything that loads late. Our web development team builds fast sites by default, and you can send a brief if you want an audit of your current one.
